LUCE SOLIDA

Stainless Steel, Gold Leaf
⌀ 4,2 x 800cm
METAFORE NEL PAESAGGIO, VILLA IBLEA 2025

In his sculpture 'Luce Solida', Michelangelo Menu transforms an immaterial ray of light into something tangible, interacting with the ancient rural landscape of stones and cultivated fields and bringing it to life through the reflection of gold leaf covering an eight-metre-long stainless steel cylinder. The landscape and the small church are intrinsic to the artistic process. ‘Luce Solida’ fits into the context just like the adjacent natural elements.

MY ARTIST’S STRIP

acrylic on canvas
11 x (94cm x 376cm)

MY ARTIST’S STRIP, MODICA 2024 DICEMBER 31TH - 2025 FEBRUARY 28TH

MY ARTIST'S STRIP features a new series of eleven large-format polyptychs (376 x 94 cm) that reconstruct a sequence of signs (SIGNS) in the effigy of key artists for Michelangelo and in the vein of Dan Flavin and his ‘Dedications in Lights’.

Each polyptych consists of four vertically overlapping paintings set within four graduated blue backgrounds, which together create the spatiality of a sky. The canvases cover an area of approximately 44 square metres and are displayed on the right wall of the Garage to symbolise American monumentality, emblematic in this sense is the Las Vegas Strip. Visitors move freely around the exhibition space, physically engaging with the work.

‘Big Sign, Little Building’ cit. Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown.

Each sign is a combination of the name of an artist and that of a place of consumption and recreation. Michelangelo creates an imaginary street composed of monochrome colours (one colour for each artist), with shapes deduced from their artworks becoming the silhouettes of the signs, and with words proper to the symbolic language of the American landscape of major commercial arteries (STRIPS).

In MY ARTIST'S STRIP Michelangelo lines up the names of great artists, writes them in large letters, exposes his own references and shows them under a new identity.

COSTRUIRE IL BLOCCO

black and white video with sound
53,42min

 2024

“COSTRUIRE IL BLOCCO” is a black and white performance video in which the artist is filmed building a marble block. The material used to "shape" the block is composed of a series of 10x15 cm photographs depicting details of white Henraux marble, the same used by Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) for his sculptures. The photographs, assembled one after the other on the wall, form a 1:1 scale marble block. The video, lasting about an hour, is also projected at a 1:1 scale and allows the viewer to observe the action from a fixed frontal viewpoint in order to grasp the effort of the action in the most direct way and convey a realistic view of the block's dimensions.

SERRA/CAPPELLA

transparent print, lightbox
100x70x8cm

LOCUS AMŒNUS, RAGUSA IBLA 2023

Serra/Cappella is a photograph of a site specific installation of a greenhouse nestled in the Ragusan coutryside, whose golden vault makes it look like a place of devotion. Visually dialoguing with the greenhouses intended for mass consumption on the coast behind, it seems to construct with them a critical allegory but also a new possibility.

FROM THE STUDY FOR ENCLOSURES SERIES : DRY STONE WALL

no. 14 embossed prints on 330g paper
420x300cm

OXILIA GALLERY, MILANO 2023

The work is part of the Study for Enclosures series: a research around different construction elements that mainly aim to delimit a space. Dry Stone Wall acts on the wall by enclosing the classic exhibition space in its center, as if the artist wanted to delimit a property. Composed of a set of embossed prints on a raw paper, the work reproduces the vividness, monochrome and repetitiveness of stones.
