MY ARTIST’S STRIP
MY ARTIST'S STRIP features a new series of eleven large-format polyptychs (376 x 94 cm) that reconstruct a sequence of signs (SIGNS) in the effigy of key artists for Michelangelo and in the vein of Dan Flavin and his ‘Dedications in Lights’.
Each polyptych consists of four vertically overlapping paintings set within four graduated blue backgrounds, which together create the spatiality of a sky. The canvases cover an area of approximately 44 square metres and are displayed on the right wall of the Garage to symbolise American monumentality, emblematic in this sense is the Las Vegas Strip. Visitors move freely around the exhibition space, physically engaging with the work.
‘Big Sign, Little Building’ cit. Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown.
Each sign is a combination of the name of an artist and that of a place of consumption and recreation. Michelangelo creates an imaginary street composed of monochrome colours (one colour for each artist), with shapes deduced from their artworks becoming the silhouettes of the signs, and with words proper to the symbolic language of the American landscape of major commercial arteries (STRIPS).
In MY ARTIST'S STRIP Michelangelo lines up the names of great artists, writes them in large letters, exposes his own references and shows them under a new identity.
